Spinal Mobility

Cat Stretch Exercise

The cat stretch is possibly the best exercise for maintaining and increasing mobility in the spine.

  • Start by kneeling on all fours with your head up, and stretch your shoulders and bottom up, allowing your back to form a concave arch.
  • Hold the position for 10 seconds
  • Then lower your head and push up with your abdominal muscles, forming your back into a convex arch.
  • Again hold this position for 10 seconds.
  • Do 10 repetitions, that is, repeat the exercise from start to finish 10 times.

Advanced Technique

To be continued, but.......Basically this involves extending one leg upwards stretching the toes, when the head is up and the back concave. When the back is arched convex, the knee should be brought forward under the body to touch the chin.
